Any and all types of health care reform are doomed to fail unless the "average citizen" , I.e. median income, is able to afford non-catastrophic health care costs for their family as an out of pocket expense.

True or false.

Define affordable. Then we need to see I that amount falls within the actuarial tables for the coverage you determine is sufficient.

i apologize if i am misunderstanding your reply.

I am not referring to coverage or insurance.

I am saying that if the average american can not afford to pay out of pocket for what the average american requires/receives in health care benefits then the whole system is bound to fail one way or the other.

Affordable to me would be 15-20% of the income of the "average american".

Most reasonable minded Americans would agree that around 15 - 20% of their income to be spent on healthcare (depending on size of family). But as long as we have an extreme right wing in this country that believes healthcare to be a privilege, then we might as well believe that affordable is $0 for the average American.

Healthcare or insurance? Actual treatment or Healthcare has to be paid for by the consumer.

To the OP, I agree with your point. However, I do not believe many people think 20% is a reasonable amount.

Are you talking care or insurance? I can't make it out due to the other mountain of stupidity in your post.

At its max estimate, US health care supposedly comprises one-sixth of the economy. The actual cost of individual healthcare is far less than that. Nonetheless, one-sixth does fall between 16% and 17%.
Right?

Doesn't leave much for retirement and college funds.

My wife and I work hard and have been successful thus far in life. So we should just pony up 22.5-30K A YEAR for health insurance? You are a fricking idiot.

2 things have happened:

1. The thread has been hijacked by Veldt.
2. Y'all are misunderstanding what the 20% indicates. What I'm saying is that if average health care costs (not insurance costs, actual costs) for the average person are more than the average person is willing to spend on health care (I suggested 15-20% of median income) , then no matter how things are structured, insured, or subsidized (single payer, self pay, insurance) the system will fail.
