That one is a mystery to me.
Ive just made the largest land purchase in the history of our young country and I am taking a tremendous amount of heat over it. I set up the Voyage of Discovery to prove it was worth the price paid. Of all the people in the country I can chose to run it......
I chose a 20 something manic depressive, who dressed frequently as a "dainty" with no experience other than the fact he was my personal secretary???
Fate did prevail with him deciding to have Clark join him or the US might have ended up very differently.

Maybe Jefferson was trying to get him killed after Meriweather walked in on Tom getting it on with Sally Hemmings.
Then his goons finally got him on the Trace.

Ah hog61, adding some knowledge to a thread as usual, as opposed to whatever that was after the OP. You do know your history, I think he killed himself on that faithful trip up the trace, but murder seems much more virtuous.

He was really "troubled". His death is a great mystery. The Trace was really rough in that time.
Here is a link about him and his death from the Smithsonian if anybody happens to wander into the thread and is curious:
Smithonian article on Meriwether Lewis
It is from 2009, they were wanting to exhume him at that time, no idea what came of it.

Still projected to go to LSU.
Jefferson and Hemings can’t block at all.
