The reason republicans constantly go against their voters is because they live in DC.

Congress members talk to their voters maybe twice a year and have to answer to them once every 2 years.
Besides online and office calls they rarely get the same pressure from their voters others put on them daily.
These people are surrounded by liberals who at every tur throughout their day pressure them to "do the right thing".
DC is full of lobyist, defense officals, liberal voters, defense contractors, and intelligence agencies who everyday bully and push them to push their agenda and use every tactic possible to do so. That's why they always fold, while they answer to us once and they just need to change their tune 3 months out from election season hoping everyone forgets.

The federal government is over. Nobody that goes to Washington will be the friend of everyday Americans it’s a foreign entity now

The reason republicans constantly go against their voters is because they continue to get re-elected.

Nikki Clinton said it best when she said you have to change your personality and principles completely in each state you campaign in.

That. Republican voters fall into the same pit Democrat voters fall into when it comes to horrendous politicians. They just continue to vote because of name recognition.
Look at Graham, McConnell, Waters, Pelosi, etc. Horrible shitheads, but they've won so many elections.

It's not just professional pressure on The Hill from democrats, it's also social and cultural pressure. If you want to get invited to the best parties and functions -- which are all hosted by liberals as a function of 99% of the city's residents being democrats -- you also have to gravitate toward their groupthink and positions. This is also why conservative supreme court justices move left once they take the bench in D.C. (see, e.g., David Souter). That is always a one-way street. When is the last time a justice who was on the left moved right once taking the bench?
It's not unlike living in Hollywood or Manhattan. If you are a Trump supporter you are not going to get invited to the lavish parties with Tom Hanks and Bono.

It’s true. They say it all the time “we are friends, but…”
I’m an adult with children. I’ve got friends that are liberal, not close with many at this point but keeping politics out of it (or trying to find common ground) is really the way this is possible.
I cannot imagine being friends with any DC democrat. Like at all.

The 17th amendment hugely contributed to this. Before its enactment, US senators were selected by the state legislatures and could be recalled by them as well. This kept the senators true to the states wants. That changed when the people voted for senators, and like you say, they don't care to deal with us anymore.

It also didn't adjust to allow for recalls. It is still illegal for states to attempt to recall federal officeholders.
