You're right. By the end of the war, they had run out of able-bodied men.
Either way, its a quibble.
My concern and point is around the creation of the "other" in American political discourse.
If you can divide a nation into two tribes you've created a potential problem.
If you can convince those two tribes the other is "evil" its a whole different story, because people are generally fine with evil things happening to "evil" people. They even see it as virtue because the "bad guy" is getting punished.
IMO the left isn't just neutral with regard to the political, legal and physical attacks on Trump and ultimately his supporters if need be. They're in favor of it at a guttural level because they see him not as a political opponent, but as a tyrant due to how the establishment and media have portrayed him.
Whatever your thoughts on him as a candidate or a person, its a huge problem when half the country thinks the other side is legitimately horrible. And instead of that sounding warning bells resulting in a halt to the histrionic rhetoric, all of the cultural safeguards are being tossed aside to deal with this false "threat to democracy" mantra. And once those norms are gone theyre gone for good and all that will be left is a short walk to secession if we're lucky or normalized political violence and persecution if we aren't.

That's well said, and it is the outcome the founders feared when they said that the republic could only survive if the people were moral. We are not.

You are absolutely correct. When the speaker of the house, tears up Trumps State of the Union address in front of the whole world and they call him Hitler, direct threat to democracy, the most vile human that has ever graced the United States. It is no wonder that left-wing lunatics start shooting. Isn’t it funny that it’s always the left shooting people on the right.
