The Biggest U.S. Navy Force Since Iraq Invasion May Be Sailing Toward Syria

The biggest U.S. Navy force since the 2003 invasion of Iraq may be headed toward Syria as President Donald Trump weighs a military response to the suspected chemical weapon attack in Douma, a town on the outskirts of Damascus.
The Times of London reports that the U.S. Navy is sending a total of ten warships and at least two submarines into the Mediterranean Sea. Any Navy task force will likely be led by the nuclear-powered aircraft carrier the U.S.S. Harry S. Truman, which set out from Norfolk, Virginia, this week with a strike group of five escort warships, according to the Times.

The American aircraft carrier is capable of carrying 90 aircraft, including F/A-18 Super Hornet fighter jets.
The guided missile destroyer the U.S.S. Donald Cook, which is capable of launching cruise missiles, is already in the area. There are believed to be three other destroyers and two submarines in the Mediterranean, as well, the Times reports. The French frigate Aquitaine has also been reported off the coast of Lebanon.

The Russian Navy has at least two Admiral Grigorovich-class frigates, which can launch cruise missiles, in the Mediterranean as well as submarines and support vessels, Reuters reports. There are also dozens of Russian warplanes stationed at the Hmeymim airbase in Syria. Russia also has an advanced S-400 anti-aircraft system, which is believed to be capable of shooting down both warplanes and cruise missiles.

They’re a little late for the party

Looks like it's happening. Any more news from the Wayback Machine?

You’re not late until you get there.

Syria has been fricked since 2011 with almost half a million deaths. What's the fricking point of bombing them, let alone doing anything in there?
Why does every administration's foreign policy have to be so idiotic and disappointing?

If you stop thinking about foreign policy as 'best interests of the American people' and rather as 'best interests of the American government and its partners', it becomes much less idiotic and much more nefarious.

Yeah, I already know the answer unfortunately. I mostly ask it rhetorically out of frustration.

Because Americans love war when they don't have to fight it, so our government isn't accountable to the overwhelming majority of the public when they decide to bomb a country or invade. I'd bet though if you brought back the draft, our military adventurism would cease within 6 months. People would be up in arms and in the street protesting.

Quite honestly, I don't know how to deal with the frustration other than bitching on the internet and focusing as much as I can on my immediate concerns. Too much knowledge and understanding of happenings doesn't make for a happy person, unless you profit from them, and at that point you've got to worry about your soul.

I met one of our fellow travelers in the wild last week. He made a joke about certain folks and my spidey senses immediately went off. I'm glad he revealed some of his power level, I'm on pins and fricking needles all the time with other law students.

Gotta keep those big military contractors paid.

Meh, sounds like your run of the mill shite deployment.
I was in a two carrier strike group in the Persian Gulf in the 90s. We didn’t do shite but frick with the Iraqis on the No Fly Zone border and launch SEAD strikes on mobile radar sites.
I’ll worry when I start to see and hear about the Marines ramping up here in So Cal. It will be obvious when the C-5s start showing up at Miramar.
Until then, I’ll trust that the Cheeto in Charge is listening to Mattis and his JCS.

Because the government does what its leaders tell them to do.

Sounds like progress to me.
