It is written in your "holy" book that God ordered the massacre of every last man, woman, and child of Midia, except that the virgins should be kept to satisfy the lusts of the conquerors. I'll paraphrase the late great Robert Ingersoll here... if there is an almighty god of justice let him write beside my name in the eternal book of remembrance that I denied that lie.

Sounds like the source you are referring to interprets "keep alive for yourselves" to mean "should be kept to satisfy the lusts of the conquerors".
