I just can't fathom how anyone think's Pascal's Wager is a way to go through life. Not to mention, it's no way to actually believe a thing. You can't decide to believe something you don't believe because you've weighed the pros and cons of not believing it.

Plus...is that REALLY the way god wants believers...people too afraid NOT to?

I tend to believe that an all knowing God would see right through such a cheap sham and he probably wouldn't be too happy about it.

Pretty sure you can't hedge your way into heaven.

which would also mean there is no devil.

This whole deal with the Devil, God, Allah, Jesus, Mary, angels, archangels, etc... makes me wonder how many gods are in the Christian pantheon.

There's only One God Christians acknowledge. Or should anyway.

The way they talk about Allah, you'd think he was a separate god from Jesus' dad.

...and hell, the way they talk about Jesus, you'd think HE was God.

Where's the wisdom in being told you need to both fear AND love the same being?

You sound like a battered wife.

Because there is no heaven. When you die, you just die. Your body and soul cease to be.

But I get why people hold out hope for a heaven.

This is my personal belief but my post was framed for those that do believe.

I used to go to church and read the Bible from time to time, and I’m for anyone believing in Christianity. I don’t see how believing in Christianity is so hated by some and yet they don’t complain about Islam.

Agree

quote:

Having said that, I really don’t want any part of a god created in the Middle East. There has been nothing but trouble in that region. We are created imperfect, but we are to strive for perfection which is impossible. I don’t need a book to tell me how I’m supposed to treat another human being.

Sin causes all the problems in the Middle East. For that matter everywhere.

quote:

Why stop at the Ten Commandments when there are many, many more.

It doesn't stop there. If you keep reading, there are plenty more.

quote:

Why would an African American believe the Bible? It condoned slavery and included passing the servants down to their descendants.

Doesn't actually condone, but it doesn't condemn it either. Also, because the Bible provides hope, even for slaves.

quote:

We are supposed to get to god thru Jesus. Wonder why we can’t get to god without Jesus?

Because Jesus' blood is the only remedy for man's sin.

quote:

Personally, I don’t want a god that would let his son die.

Actually it "pleased" God to see his Son's death.

Agree? Atheists, myself included, bitch about Islam all the time. Guys like Sam Harris get BLASTED by the left for going hard at Islam. the reason you probably don;t hear it is because you're not listening for it, and because we live in a nation where Christianity is the majority religion. That's why you hear that one talked about...because it's the one we have.

C'mon man...

quote:

Leviticus 25:44-46 ESV /
As for your male and female slaves whom you may have: you may buy male and female slaves from among the nations that are around you. You may also buy from among the strangers who sojourn with you and their clans that are with you, who have been born in your land, and they may be your property. You may bequeath them to your sons after you to inherit as a possession forever. You may make slaves of them, but over your brothers the people of Israel you shall not rule, one over another ruthlessly.

I could go on and on with this...

quote:

Also, because the Bible provides hope, even for slaves.

Sure does! This sounds awesome...

quote:

Ephesians 6:5 ESV
Slaves, obey your earthly masters with fear and trembling, with a sincere heart, as you would Christ,

Exodus 21:20-21 ESV
“When a man strikes his slave, male or female, with a rod and the slave dies under his hand, he shall be avenged. But if the slave survives a day or two, he is not to be avenged, for the slave is his money.

Titus 2:9-10 ESV
Slaves are to be submissive to their own masters in everything; they are to be well-pleasing, not argumentative, not pilfering, but showing all good faith, so that in everything they may adorn the doctrine of God our Savior.

Exodus 21:1-36 ESV
“Now these are the rules that you shall set before them. When you buy a Hebrew slave, he shall serve six years, and in the seventh he shall go out free, for nothing. If he comes in single, he shall go out single; if he comes in married, then his wife shall go out with him. If his master gives him a wife and she bears him sons or daughters, the wife and her children shall be her master's, and he shall go out alone. But if the slave plainly says, ‘I love my master, my wife, and my children; I will not go out free,’ ...

Very hopeful.

I'd suggest not going down the "But context!!!" road here...

The civil law allowed for a lot of things like that out of the hardness of the hearts of the people. It's why divorce--while hated by God--was allowed.

It's usually not a good idea to try to apply the civil and ceremonial laws of the physical nation of Israel to modern day in an attempt to prove that God supports us acting in such ways.

Well, context does matter. I'll assume you don't care about Old Covenant vs New Covenant either.

I am OK with that. You're choice.
