And yes, a meteorite could do serious damage. They can weigh over 60 tons.

This is precisely why, as someone said above, we can't build a reactor in the US in five years much less on the moon. It's this kind of thinking. It's also the reason Trump signed an EO that essentially bitch slapped the NRC back in May. Insane regulations that hype up the most minuscule levels of risk, such as trying to protect against radiation levels even lower than that which occurs naturally as background.

You can hold on to your worries, I suppose. As for me, I'm willing to take the risk that a 60 ton meteorite will not hit our reactor on the moon.

How the hell are we going to cool the spent rods with no water source?

You should realize that only considering today's technology and knowledge, that this would not be an issue for at least 50 years. Maybe it's just me, but I'm guessing within 50 years we will have this solved. It may be as simple as launching the spent fuel into space and away from the earth. I do not believe general zod is floating around out there.

I’m sure there’s some kind of strategy here but aren’t we 36T in the hole?

It sounds like they're pretty much unwilling to let the Chinese get there and do this first. I'm sure they know what they're doing.

Louisiana actually has plans on building some more Nuclear power plants in the near future.

But why?

From what I understand is that China has plans to do the same thing in a time span of 10 years. The US and China wants the same location to build a moon base as a "Midway" to build on mars. The U.S. has set the goal to get there before China does. The reason for building the reactor is because you can't own territory on the moon, but if you build a stucture you can own the structure.

Honestly the moon could easily get a new reactor before we got one in the states.

Yes, considering that the one they want to put on the moon is the size of an industrial air conditioning unit.

OSHA is going to have a field day with this one. So are the unions. The manpower alone, operating cost, materials. Oxygen? Lunch trucks, where can you take a smash? This is ridiculous.

Does OSHA have jurisdiction on the moon?

There's probably someone up there right now, waiting in a boulder field.

Well, if you believe some folks, a whole lot could go wrong.

A lot of people believe we were warned off the moon decades ago.

I want to know how they're going to build it, cool it and maintain it. It'll be really awesome when a meteorite blows a hole through it and we have a meltdown.

5 years, eh?

Considering Government and Military are 20 - 30 years more advanced than what us little people know? We are probably already there.

Case in point Stealth Technology starting from SR-71 thru F-117 and B-2. All were flying for years before the little people knew.

Just where are we in actual working technology?

If I remember correctly the B-2 was designed in like '59 or maybe even before.

If you are saying what I think you are saying, did you see The Martian?

I did not.

But I imagine some roughneck racing to the can, tearing his suit off, taking a dump in a Haz bag, and drop kicking it into the atmosphere only for it to splash into an oncoming, freighter's wind shield. A typical day on the moon, nuclear reactor project.

Ze Germans had the first flying wing concept.
And the Antigravity Bell.

Considering many of the fortunate Nazi scientists and intelligence people were incorporated into our space, weapons and intelligence bureaucracies, it is incredible the advances we have made since 1945.
