Toyota and Mercedes-Benz announce new investment, production and jobs in the US but in right to work states and with non union jobs. These are high paying, good benefit jobs but non union.

GM on the other hand is threatening to shut down plants in Ohio and elsewhere. Ford is cutting a lot of jobs. Their costs are just too high with UAW labor.

So in the US American OEMs can be held hostage to a union but foreign companies are exempt from the UAW.

I understand it's a right to work state issue but are GM and Ford that dumb?

It looks to me that the American manufacture's are building overseas not to flee the US workers but the UAW.

When they signed Union contracts, they pretty much were... Mainly because they will not be allowed to move a plant to another state and produce the same product...

I believe the same thing happened with Boeing when they wanted to move production to a plant in NC and the NLRB stepped in a put a stop to it...

UAW destroyed the American automobile. I have zero sympathy for GM or Ford.

You mean SC? Pretty sure they built a plant there.

I hope that GM, Ford and Fiat Chrysler get the strength to stand up to the UAW and just say no.

Of course that's like the GOPe getting some balls.

Maybe been awhile but didn't they block the production or movement of a product from out west to the plant?

Took a year apparently and the bottom link tells why the complaint was dropped (basically the union is Washington held Boeing hostage)...

Yeah. But it wasn't the UAW it was another big union that does Boeing in Seattle.

Which shows if the Big 3 would just say bye, we are moving to a right to work state and not unionizing. That's the key. Ford has a F series assembly plant in Texas but it's UAW.

The best result was to let them all fail back in 09......go bankrupt.....cancel all relationships with unions......let the obsolete unions go away for good.....restart capitalist automotive giants.

Wait for the following in 3...2...1

“Me n my union brothers work hard for that $56.00/hour.”

“Unions prevent people from falling into meat vats....I read it in The Jungle.”

“But where else can I work for 4 days a week and make twice as much?”

Big unions don't police their own workforce like they should. If you pay dues they will stand by you, it doesn't matter if you are a good employee.

The unions should be the cream of the workforce. Their bargaining power would be more effective.

Boeing is still in Seattle and actually increased production at that plant in order for the union to encourage the NLRB to drop its complaint... Same situation the Big 3 happen to find themselves in... They cannot shut a plant down and move the product, which was my point...

The delta is basically 2 to 1 Union vs Non union shop. as in, a Union shop's labor costs are twice what a right to work shop's are. Not really sure how you can compete with that.

Also, its bothering me that a Toyota is more American than a Sierra or Silverado. And not just where its made. parts content, etc. And that aint close either. GMC trucks are something stupid like 60% foreign sourced vs I think 35-40 for the Tundra.

Maybe one day our folks will learn.

GM has a UAW plant in Arlington, and Toyota has their plant (non-union) near San Antonio. Ford doesn't have any plants in Texas.
