Not additional 18s I meant but fulfilling the 35’s role with an upgraded Rhino.

We desperately need more 18s as well.

Remember when F-14s cost in the neighborhood of $20 mil and were about impossible to crash*? Good times.

The thing is, when up against an F35, that F-14 would be a $20MM hole in the water.

I worked in Acquisitions...contractors will do exactly what they think they can get away with.
I promise you despite seemingly infinite corporate power, the government owns their arse, and it's why the MIC dumps(lobbies) millions into Congress's coffers...so they'll let the corporations continue.
One case of the red-arse shuts entire sections down.

It’s not like the per unit cost of the 35 was ever gonna go up. Anyone who’s remotely familiar with JSF and the 35 knows that.

Yeah, no. Costs on weapons programs always go up over time, regardless of economies of scale. In fact, the more prevalent the platform, the more leverage the contractor has. It’s not the free market.

Its simply not cost effective per plane to operate.

How many targets have the kind of pricetag to keep these guys in the air?

While I upvoted, I’d argue about folks laughing at additional F-18’s. Regardless of the PNUC of F-35’s, in LRIP or not, their operating cost per hour is still outrageous. Barring a clash with a first rate power, the F-35’s capabilities aren’t unique and while role consolidation has many warfighting and cost saving implications for the future, the JSF is just one of the myriad of airframes the Air Force needs to upgrade. It’s one outstanding benefit is that it’s here now.

I agree that the F-18 has the tools to do about 80% of the attack/fighter role in most theaters but they stand no chance against Gen 5 fighters (ours anyway). I got a chance to talk to some F-15 guys that we’re in Red Flag 18-1 and they said it’s just no contest. He said they were dead by the time they got to the box. They actually changed some of the packages because the Gen 5 fighters were so dominant that it was disruptive to the exercise. For what it’s worth, they thought one F-22 was as good as 3 F-35s.

With a program that has been shite on long before Trump? All I’m trying to say is that it’s all bigger than him and really has very little to do with him personally.
