Although it is well known that American universities are hotbeds of “woke” political activism, the absurdity of what such activists are able to pressure administrators into doing never ceases to amaze.

Today’s example comes from UCLA, where students successfully pressured the school into not hiring a professor simply because he was skeptical of using “diversity statements” in employment decisions. Yoel Inbar argues that using them as a hiring requirement can be a way to root out those who do not “[signal] an allegiance to a certain set of beliefs.”

How do the students find out about these hires? Someone on the inside must have heard it and organized this flash mob, pretending to be a majority, and pressured them into rescinding the hire.

Stop getting pushed around by flash mobs. They aren't anything close to a majority, but they make themselves look like they are.

That name sounds diverse.

Those students should be expelled for being white supremacists.

Public universities are required to post all jobs publicly for a specified period of time.

If a faculty candidate makes it past the initial interview stage and is invited for an on-campus visit, her/ his name is typically well-posted in elevators, hallways, etc.

In addition to giving a job talk (presentation of research agenda, publications, etc.), campus interviews also include a teaching demonstration, whereby the candidate prepares a sample lesson to teach to undergraduate students.

Hiring a new professor is a very transparent process—by law.
