A rumor circulating on social media — and unsupported by concrete evidence — suggests that Niemann was tapping into a computer program through a “prostate massager” or “wireless anal beads” that could secretly communicate winning moves to him.

This is complete BS.
Nobody in the chess world seriously thinks that he was using a computer to cheat in an over the board match.
Some chess vlogger jokingly said that and people took off with it for some odd reason, but it was not said in any serious way. So if you laugh, laugh at the people perpetuating the story, like Huffington Post.

I'm certain that the guy is guilty. You can't make this up.

Lots of people and lots of important people think he cheated it isn't just fringe people.
I do know that Hikaru had to retract his statements after being threatened with legal action. Hikaru is one of the best chess players in the world.
Like I have said on the chess.com forum. There is no real evidence that he cheated. Hans is a hated person in the chess community and has admitted to cheating when he was 12 and 16 years old.
I hate cheater more than almost anyone, but I will not be party to accusing someone of cheating that basically just accomplished a great feat without some real evidence.
Either way Magnus Carlson ruined the tournament when he dropped out. It was a round robin tournament so it really screwed up the entire tournament. So even if Hans cheated Magnus was wrong for dropping out of the tournament.
If you look at everything objectively it appears thatMagnus is a sore loser. But of course since he is the best and has been for 10 years, people take his side. Sort of like people all around the USA being Alabama fans. Pretty sad.

Here's the thing that I don't understand about cheating, especially with regard to chess.
Chess is more about proving to oneself that he/she is that good. So why cheat? There is no lasting satisfaction of having won illegitimately.
Of course, the situation would be different unless you're a North Korean or Chinese player and your Government is pointing a gun at your family's back to ensure you comply.

Does anyone know how many games they played before Carlsen resigned in protest?

The dude quit after the guys second move. Does any chess player here know what he saw after two moves that gave him the idea the other guy was cheating?

They just played each other in a different tournament. MC showed up only because he was contractually obligated to play. That is the match that he quit on his second move.
The original round robin tournament was underway and Hans (black) beat Magnus (white). White pieces have an ever so slight advantage over black.

So they only played one full game? And then Magnus resigned on move 2 during their next meeting?

They played one full game against each other and there was to be no other games played against each other. Everyone plays everyone else one time. That is why a player quitting screws the tournament for everyone.
So yes Magnus quit on the second move at their next meeting which was in a totally different tournament. The pairing of Magnus vs Hans in this other tournament was known weeks before the scandal hit.

Watching “War Games” recently, I realized the computer’s voice is the guy who plays Professor Falken (John Wood). It’s just digitized up. Definitely Wood’s pronunciation.
