No doubt. That low-life, slave owning Jefferson Memorial on the Mall needs to come down next. And G. Washington was down with the whole atrocity too; drop his also.

Like Capt. Redlegs on 'Josey Wales' says: "doing right don't never end".

Wow. Hopefully ignorant people like you will one day learn to understand why these art pieces/historical objects are standing.

It's not so much the statues that bother me and probably most of us. It's the waste of money, and worse the constant drumbeat of "look at all the racism!" No one cared about these statues, but Suddenly they were important bc a politician wanted pandering points. It took a politician to tell people they should be offended. Next it'll be street names, building names, town names, and on and on. And every time, it'll be a new wave of "look, black people, look at how much this country hated you! NEVER forget, NEVER move on!" Yet changing these things does absolutely nothing to change the past and absolutely nothing to better the lives of minorities.

Following the successful firing of five torpedoes on 6 December 1960, Robert E. Lee departed for Cape Kennedy, Florida, arriving on 12 December 1960. She then loaded Polaristest missiles and on 22 December 1960 conducted her first missile launch. The Polaris flew "hot and true."

Great now we are going to have a bunch of overweight, racist, chain smoking citizens from surrounding parishes holding up traffic at lee circle during my morning commute.

I'm sure the hot dog and 44oz soda sales at On the Run will sky rocket that day...

Well that big traffic circle will need a new tenant to unify us. But who?

Morgus?

History is History. It isn't taught like it once was because there are some that don't want future generations to learn from and understand our past, good or bad. We learn from it good or bad if it is taught objectively and honestly.

there is a marked difference between history and commemoration. that is to say, we can learn from painful episodes of the past without building monuments to commemorate and glorify figures who caused that pain.

are you aware of the context in which these memorials and monuments were built? it was not to teach history. it was purely on behalf of a white supremacist racial ideology. the monuments were constructed between 1884 and 1915, with major funding from the sons of confederate veterans, the daughters of the confederacy, and along with paramilitary organizations like the white man’s league fought to restore white “home” rule during reconstruction and white supremacy in southern states after reconstruction ended through intimidation, violence, and mass disenfranchisement of african americans.

that is what these statues commemorate and celebrate. not simply "painful" episodes from history. the statues are dripping with white supremacist ideology, and only a passing familiarity with the context of their construction can teach that.

It was a muggy December day in New Orleans, overly hot for the season, but not uncommon to the locals. The air hung heavy and damp as Rhy'quell finished mugging his third tourist of the day. A fine haul of 43 dollars, an iPhone and some jewelry had been well worth beating the middle aged New York native about the face with his pistol.

He left her whimpering in the alley as he grabbed the front of his sagging pants and walked away. He overheard the sounds of the local news through an open window. Apparently the city council had voted to remove the Confederate statues in the city, to a raucous applause from the assembled natives. Rhy'quell mused on how the city was finally doing something to combat the terrible problems of New Orleans, and rounded the corner with a golden smile flashing across his lips.

He stood in the looming shadow. The sun no longer reflected across his grill. He raised his gaze slowly across the grey-green boots. The trunks of metal legs. The oxidized overcoat.

His brown eyes beheld a bronze beard a foot above his head. Metal eyes met his gaze, empty and unfeeling, silently judging him. His own grew wide with confusion and fear, followed by anger. His gun came up perpendicular to the sidewalk and his mouth formed into a sneer as he grabbed his crotch with one hand and fired his pistol into the obstacle in his path, each report accompanied by curse from his lips.

The bullets tore through the figure, punching neat holes through the first layer of metal skin and rattling around as they struck the other side, their velocity not enough to carry them through.

The mouth never moved. The eyes never blinked. Rhy'quell's sneer turned to a trembling of lips as the golem swung its sword in a terrible arc. The blade made thick, wet sound as it sliced through his neck in a font of blood. His dreadlocks fanned out in all directions as his head rolled into the gutter, like dice in a back alley game.

The General stood sentinel straight, the red gore dripping from his saber. Seems he had his work cut out for him. But after all, it was they that had wanted him to come down...

So nice of you to clear this up. All this time I thought heritage groups wanted to honor the service of their ancestors. We are so lucky to have a superior intellect like you posting here.

My treasonous forefathers dishonored me by seceding over slavery first and then by losing the war. They doubled down on shame. Time for those reminders to go.
