If he tries to push through any of his pet projects or amnesty it will doom the R's chances. I think the midterms would be way more successful for R's if they elected another Speaker right away.
Does Ryan not GAF because the GOPe is not POTUS/ in power?

My guess is that they want Ryan to stay in place in the event that they do lose the majority in the midterms. That way if they need to push through any last minute lame duck congress bullshite it will fall on Ryan's watch as will the lose of the majority, not the new "minority leader" that will be the aspiring next Speaker of the House when the Republicans eventually re-take the House.
I believe the Republicans will maintain control of the House , but I think this is the reason the freedom caucus isn't throwing a shoe right now.
