Southern Baptist Convention begins its “makeover”

Refusing to cede power without a fight, fundamentalist Baptists nominated Ken Hemphill as an opposition candidate. But Greear won with nearly 70 percent of the vote, becoming the youngest SBC president in 37 years.
Grear has promised to lead the denomination down a different path, which, he has said, must include efforts both to repent of a “failure to listen to and honor women and racial minorities” and “to include them in proportionate measures in top leadership roles.” If the meeting in Dallas is any indication, his vision is resonating with a large number of the next wave of Baptist leaders.

Oh look, leftists will defile something else!

Sad. Baptists were one of the last uncucked Protestant denominations.

The SBC will be interesting to watch if the fundamentalists completely lose power. I predict you will see it split. They have to do something. They've lost 1,000,0000 members over the past decade.

You will absolutely see a split, and you should. People aren't Baptists because they want to be worldly. Theres plenty of denominations for that.

That’s because Christianity is dying.

I wouldn't say it's dying. It's definitely evolving though as it has throughout the ages.

SBC stands as the last large group of churches to not get completely pozzed to death. They've already got the Methodists, Lutherans, and Episcopalians and the Catholics are getting it as we speak. If the SBC cucks it's all over.

Trump is accomplishing more with statue removals, #metoo, and moderating the SBC than Obama could’ve dreamed of in his first year.

No. It’s dying. I didn’t say by Thursday but in another couple thousand years it will be dead. It’s already starting to struggle to breath. It will die like every version before and after that try to explain why we’re here and who must have meant for us to be here in order for it to be so.

I used to go to a SBC church. I don't go to church currently but if I did it would definitely be a non-denominational.

Well, the Southern Baptist Church has a pretty checkered history in this regard. I knew of several churches in the 80's that split over the idea of allowing black people to attend.

As a religion, not as a spiritual concept. It's definitely evolving.

I've got no problem with them trying to be more inclusive of minorities but putting women in major leadership positions is... "problematic"

I don't have the statistics on it but isn't that the trend across America? A general shift toward non-denominational, larger, and more contemporary churches?
I've only been to one, they played guitars, and it seemed very watered down. The points they did make sounded very similar to some a Baptist preacher might make but with less fire-and-brimstone and more kumbaya, ever since then I've personally equated "Non-Denominational" with "Unaffiliated Baptist"...but I guess every non-denominational church is going to vary and that's the whole point of them.

Because it directly contradicts scriptural guidance.
I really hope the fundamentalists consider a split. There needs to be a church that isn't worldly for true Christians to go to.

Now I’ll have to find a snake handler church if I want old school.

This is very unfortunate. The last truly Christian denomination is coming to its end.

The fact that The Atlantic is singing the praises of the Southern Baptist Convention should be an eye-opener to these "leaders" that they are headed down the wrong path.
