I mean, is it illegal to be an eccentric? I'm sorry, I thought this was America.

Not that I am aware of. Homesteading on someone else's property, having illegal weapons and weapons on a college campus (property), firing said weapons on the college property but other than that, a few eccentricities shouldn't bother anyone.

If he was black and living in a tent in those same woods and this happened the left would be outraged .... or, better yet, lets say he was black and on a track of land where developers wanted to build new residential housing.

This guy was taken down because it's up north right? He's white and it's college property and everyone knew beforehand that no one would run to his defense or protest his arrest.

That's what the guy really did wrong. Other than that he's doing nothing more than living some peoples' dream .... hidden away from society and basically left alone to his own devices.

Thank you. My OP title was a rhetorical and sarcastic question. You explained my, and other's, opinion quite succinctly. My understanding is, that in some states, it is against the law to live off the grid. Florida is one of these states, I believe? Charge the guy with trespass and let him go. Just based on the article, he has proven himself to be a survivor. Snowflakes and the rest of us could learn a thing or two from people like this.

Heck it's not like he dug a foxhole in the quad.

I really don't know what to make of it. Between the guy clearly being just a teeny bit nutty, and the article playing it up as much as humanly possible.....it should be a draw. But didn't turn out that way I guess.

Yeah. Article said he had been there between 7 to 10 years. Did he volunteer that info or did they know he was there? Were they OK with his being there until he fired the weapons?

Yeah, guy volunteered the 7-10 year info, which how in the hell did he reside in this location that long without having any run-ins with the law? The article seems to insinuate that it's near enough to campus that it does get foot traffic throughout the wooded area. The dude who led police to the bunker knew exactly where it was because he had seen the guy several times while walking through the woods. But apparently never found it creepy enough to call the law.

It's as if guy was quietly keeping to himself in an extraordinary way, but all of a sudden....... "the community needs to stay vigilant" in keeping an eye out for these crazy whites with guns. The one cop said it's unlike anything he's seen in his 44 years of law enforcement." Good Lord, really?? C'mon man.

That's "an arsenal"? Hope they don't show up at my place

You own the property. This is a castle doctrine state. Put a stop to it.

Set up a tent "where this is happening". They come through. Fear for your life. Grab 12 gauge/.357mag/30-06. Fire.

Dude.

Defend your property.

Wow. This whole thread is made up of assumptions, speculations and wild innuendos and this is the "assumption" you question. My post was more about why a sawed off is illegal comparing it to a turkey gun ( as in a XXFull choke vs no choke at all) rather the specific barrel lengths, but OK. Whatever!

The only “crime” this guy may have committed is Trespassing or illegal camping.

If he chose to be a homeless guy living in the city streets and shitting in alleys, they would praise him for his bravery.

Damned hypocrites.

If the guy was going to do something crazy, he had plenty of time to do it, and didn't. I am sure he has shot off a few shots before, but someone heard him this time. Can't be having nonconformity on campus land, I guess. It might give the students other ideas their indoctrination is trying to suppress.
