Soccer doesn't fit into that paradigm. Soccer is a poor man's sport...or a little girls sport. You can sign up any daughter and they can play soccer tomorrow. You have to actually teach them to hit a baseball for Little League which takes time.

Yeah, all those rich kids from the Dominican Republic sure do dominate baseball!
To me the cool thing about the elite soccer players is that they are not genetic freaks. Typically average in height and weight. In order to become elite in most other sports you have to already win the genetic lottery which eliminates 99% of the competition. Soccer is the worlds most popular sport and it favors an average build so the truly elite are going to be the most skillful and creative players.

you'd be shocked to know that there are far more conservatives in California than anywhere in the deep south too though.

They have 40 million people there so we'd be "shocked" to find conservatives among the 40 million?

What exactly do you mean by "anywhere in the deep south"?Another state or the entire region?

I mean if it wasn’t “cool” for rednecks to hate it, and had a half arse grasp on how to play it soccer fans wouldn’t be so defensive.

From 1978 to now soccer has been the sport of the future in America.

Never happened. It was going to overtake the NFL and MLB.

Well. It's here.

According to Gallup polling, it's the number one sport for Americans aged 18-34.

Spoken like someone who clearly doesn't understand the sport of soccer.

You don’t have to like soccer but to have some superiority complex against people who do is pathetic.

So youre thinking you'd be happier if "rednecks" liked your sport more

This is why people like to have fun at the expense of soccer fans. It's a cult

Well he shouldn't include Texas. More Texans voted for Trump than Californians.

No I think it’s the being proud of ones ignorance that is frusterating. Wanting to show how fun a sport can be to watch and share it with people, but if those people are just determined to plug ears then plug away. “I don’t know, and I don’t want to know” is such a weird way to go through life.

I'm not a soccer fan, per se. I enjoy the Five Stripes but I've never been into all soccer

People pick on soccer players like they do the chess club. Don't take it personal. If y'all didn't get so defensive it wouldn't happen.

Well. To the point I was addressing about how people have been talking about soccer taking over for 50 years and it hasn't happened... almost anyone has been able to play for a while, but soccer hasn't been THE FAVORITE sport of 18-34 year olds until now.

With the EPL and Champions League easy access, it has finally taken hold.

As a matter of fact, college football should take notice and learn from what makes soccer, and specifically the Champions League, so popular. College football has the potential to be a top 3 sport in the country like it used to be.

This is blatantly untrue. Generally you need to be in professional situation by age 8 to make it, and by age 8 you need to have been playing with your local team since you were 4 or 5. This is to make it at the top level. It takes a lot of time to develop skills and commit them to muscle memory. It's actually a complicated process with differing solutions, broken up into different models, namely the Federation model, where the football federation of a country controls youth instruction, or the club-model.

Well that's not necessarily true. One study of Danish soccer players found that the amount of slow-twitch muscle fibers was greater than the amount found in the average Danish person. We don't tend to think of being able to run all day as athletic, but it is. It isn't explosive but the ability to do something over and over for a long time is also genetic.

We tend to think that our American athletes would dominate at soccer if they tried, since we have the best athletes in the world, but it would be a lot more Jerry Rice types than anything else. 4.4 speed 5 seconds at a time doesn't really manifest itself in soccer because the fast twitch isn't actually what's important, it's the ability to run. 4.8 in control for 90 minutes.

In the United States, soccer is a middle to upper middle class white kid sport for the most part. Those kids can play any sport that they want to.

In other countries, it's a sport for lesser economically gifted people. Baseball is as well.

Baseball is also a middle to upper middle class sport in the U.S.

Those are also two of the most common sports for middle to upper middle class kids to play today.
