Should the pharmaceutical industry be regulated similar to the energy sector?

I heard a report on the news a few weeks ago that the pharmaceutical industry is purposely suppressing the supply a several life saving drugs solely in the name of profit. I don't understand how they are allowed to continue to gouge the general public. Just imagine if your electric or gas company was allowed to do the same if no regulations were in place?

This is criminal that this is allowed to be common business practices in the U.S.

I don’t know what the solution is but something needs to be done about the pharmaceutical companies.

Maybe that report was a lie?

Edit:
And the reason Rx is so expensive for some meds is the FDA regs and patent laws.

So, you don't think drug pricing is out of control?

Depends in the med.
To which med are you referring?

Some very good medicines that are widely used are extremely affordable.

Some newer meds that have a limited market are incredibly expensive.

The practices of pharmaceutical companies, be it their pricing policies or their drug availability policies, illicit a great deal of emotion from people since it is the nature of their business to deliver wellness to consumers.

That alone does not, IMHO, mean they should be regulated to the point of being dictated to by the government.

I have prescription eyes drops that I get filled in Louisiana at a locally owned drug store that is aprt of a coop but not a large chain.

I was out of town and ran low so I called my eye doc who called in a script to the local Walgreens and I could pick it up where I was visiting. When I went to pick it up I was told it was $500. I didn't want to use my insurance because of the Medicare Part D donut hole crap.

So I called my pharmacist is La. and he told me that the retail price on that medication was $18.00. It is an older medicine so all generic, no brand name mistake.

So he send it to me overnight and I saved over 400 bucks.

It is not the drug companies. It is the intermediate companies like Caremark that are making more money than the drug companies and drug stores combined and then kicking back to both drug companies and large chains like walgreens and CVS.

That's one of the things Trump wants to stop.

Don't forget the litigation costs. Yes, suing drug companies affects your wallet.
