Might even kick in federal funding to support the process.
Why waste money to fix a non-existent problem?
I wouldn't mind much if they did this, but we both know this isn't the route they'll take. It'll be purges of minorities and the poor under the guise of 'securing the integrity of elections'

You love to throw federal money at things that aren't problems. Don't get all pussy on us now.

Trump wanting to investigate illegal immigrant participation in the election.
That's the last thing Trump wants to do. He's already claiming it was huge and widespread and he knows his supporters will believe it even with no supporting evidence. If he actually did investigate it, he would risk the investigation turning up very little evidence of illegal voting and undermine his entire alternate reality about the popular vote. Guaranteed, he will NOT order any serious investigation into this.

why should the American people not want an inquiry to see just how problematic this issue is?
They absolutely should. I would love to see this question investigated thoroughly. The results would almost certainly undercut every GOP attempt to discourage potential adverse voters through trumped-up (pun intended) allegations of widespread voter fraud. The whole justification for their various attempts to keep likely Dem voters from voting would be discredited.

I wasn't aware this data was on my voter card. How will they know to purge my poor black arse?

Yall know the Bush administration launched an investigation into voting fraud and found nothing, right?

After a five-year hunt for voter fraud, the Bush administration's Justice Department came up with little widespread fraud, finding mostly cases of people mistakenly filling out voter registration forms or voting when they didn't know they were ineligible, The New York Times reported in 2007. But none of the cases involved a person voting as someone else.
