To be followed by lay offs!

The report from the Commerce Department on Wednesday indicated that record-high gas prices took their toll on sales elsewhere. Excluding cars and gas station sales, retail sales came in at minus 0.4 percent compared with a month earlier.

The results were much worse than expected and showed a steep reversal from the prior month. Economists had expected retail sales to climb 0.1 percent from April. The March to April figure was revised down to 0.7 percent from the preliminary report of 0.9 percent, an indication that sales were already weaker than expected.

Not true, NOT TRUE!!! That nice press secretary lady told me that the economy is booming and the Turnip said he was tired of hearing about bad news...

Who didn't expect this?

I've been predicting it would start around July/August for a few months now. Gasoline went up faster than I thought (didn't think it would hit $5 nationally until July, apparently the average consumer is more stubborn than I thought) but everything else seems to be on track. June will have a slump on employment, July's numbers (which come out in August) will begin to concern people. August's numbers will scare the shite out of them.

If this holds true, expect to start seeing stories about a world food shortage as a more prominent component of nightly newscasts (especially broadcast news) as we go from August through October (and possibly even into the fall, depending on how bad it gets).

Now there's no reason for this shite to be "unexpected".
