Repubs attempt to fix immigration based on who you know rather than what you know.

The disaster pushed by Obama stopped basing immigration on skills. His push to replace immigration based upon needed talent with the disaster called chain migration has added liabilities instead of assets. Simply put the chain didn't stop at the nuclear family so every single immigrant brings in an average of 3.5 more. And the lower demo's were bringing in even more who are burdening the system. You talk about a domino effect!

I thought he had already accomplished some of this by raising the minimum compensation level for an H1B.

While you are correct on the longterm effects of family reunification immigration policy, you are incorrect in assuming this was an Obama change.

Chain migration has been the primary driver of immigration policy since Hart-Celler in 1965. It has been upheld by every piece of immigration legislation ever since. Obama didn't do anything significant to accelerate it, he just carried on the policies enacted and enforced under Nixon, Reagan, and both Bushes (as well as Democrat administrations).

The only serious challenge to family reunification was the Jordan Commission, which recommended ending the practice. From Wikipedia:
quote:

The commission recommended that total immigration be cut by one-third to approximately 550,000 per year. The commission supported increasing enforcement against illegal immigrants and their employers, eliminating visa preferences for siblings and adult children of U.S. citizens, and ending unskilled immigration except for refugees and nuclear families. The commission's report to Congress said that it was "a right and responsibility of a democratic society to manage immigration so that it serves the national interest", concluded that "legal immigration has strengthened and can continue to strengthen this country" and "decried hostility and discrimination against immigrants as antithetical to the traditions and interests of the country." The commission recommended that the United States reduce the number of refugees admitted annually to 50,000 (this level would be lifted during emergencies).
Unfortunately, her premature death due to complications from multiple sclerosis effectively ended the commission with no legislation ever proposed.

BTW, when Trump proposed virtually identical limits on legal immigration as the Jordan Commission recommendations in his 2018 SOTU address, this was the reaction.

It is time to label the ones at the border what they are. Line jumpers they are NOT immigrants.

Close the border and kick them all back across. Immigrants are people that follow our laws and sometimes wait years, following the process, spending quite a bit of money in some cases, and doing it the right way to get here.

It is terribly unfair to those people to kiss the asses of the line jumpers, just letting them walk to the head of the line based on geographic proximity and nothing else. Not even mentioning they break our laws not once, but many of them twice but usually skipping court dates after being caught.

I'd sell it that way, they all have to go, and go NOW. No more get in, and Eff the Democrats' voter drive.
