I favor the traditional African American style of bbq, slow low and sweet. Pretty simple, nothing fancy or particular necessary.
Are you able to define this? Sounds kind of broad sweeping as African Americans who grew up in central TX, Memphis, and NC all likely have different takes and styles on BBQ. Please enlighten the board.

Well I appreciate your interest. So those places you named, they all have just as many white bbq enthusiasts and restauranteurs as black. So I don’t see any of those necessarily being tied specifically to black people.
On the other hand, have you ever noticed blacks gathered to bbq at family reunions, Church, and home cookouts? They gonna fellpwship and chill and grill all day long and have “cheap”sauce, sweet, and just meat that they like. And yes that is a pretty uniform standard. No hipster specialty sauce or heady grass fed beef or pellet grills (for the most part). Slow low and sweet.

The point is, you could say the same about white folks and families in different regions.

Sure, that’s absolutely possible. But think of the style that is “soul food”. Same overall approach to that food style, slow low and sweeten it up. I guess I would say that I’ve somewhat closely observed and admired their overall traditional approach to home cooked foodl (at least throughout the south) as long as I can remember. You then easily recognize the common philosophies.

Some of that good smothered steak, rice n gravy, tender collards, and when I say sweet tea I mean sweet tea. Or sweet n buttery chicken n dumplins.
