I figured the original Charlton Heston movie was the main inspiration considering it's far more well known and successful than the spin-off tv series.

NBC did a Saturday morning cartoon in the 70s that was better than the series. Itt is on Hulu.

No. The original movie was political. Ape political leaders were religious conservatives and science deniers.
Gov was a theocracy.

It has nothing to do with race.

On the series, I believe it was Earth. Seems like I remember the statue of liberty buried up to her head in sand (or something like that)

It's kinda both...a movie in the 60s...to a series in 74..to the big screen later
