The shoeless banjo player being part of the honoring of an American icon is a tribute to the shoeless banjo player.

That's what makes outrage over this so stupid. Should they have dressed the slave up in equal clothing and put him at the same height as the featured person? Would that have been a correct representation of that era? No, of course not.

Taking away the banjo player to "clean up history" is the kind of crap that dooms us to repeat it.

And if nobody has heard of Stephen Foster, then it shows you what kind of ignorance of history is plaguing this country, and removing this statue only furthers it.
