Agree. A large standing army is just wasting money.
We will never be invaded..and we have over 80 million private gun owners here in the US that deters any country from invading here.
If we have to go on a major ground war, we can raise the troops in a short amount of time.
Keep a large Navy and AF. Keep our special forces and intelligence gathering. We have the technology and weaponry to decimate a country without putting a single boot on the ground if we really wanted to.

I don't agree with you on hardly anything but at least you aren't one these people who constantly bitch about the size of government then complain when military cuts are on the table.
Aren't you one of those people that wants to gut the military but not do much about entitlement spending? Not trolling, serious question?
I'm for cutting them all btw, I just don't believe we can safely cut as much defense spending as some of you would like... The 50% number some on here have thrown out is nuts.

I'm down for more cuts to the military.
Just hope there are equal cuts to other elements of government spending.

pour most of the savings into the Navy (which is way too small for it's mission) and special forces and we will likely still out spend the next 5 nations with a military.
The thing is, I don't expect the US to save a penny from the drawdown. Most if not all of the freed-up money will go towards domestic vote-buying, I'd bet.

(not a response to you, just thought I'd throw something into this thread)
Was talking to a guy a couple weeks ago and he was telling me that they'd go to the range and waste bullets so that they didn't get their budget cut.
I bet stuff like that happens across the board and it really doesn't sit well with me.

When I was in, they would send people to DLI for four-month language refresher courses just to ensure their budget was all spent. Sad times.

Yeah if you don't spend all your money in a fiscal year your budget gets decreased the next year. Most backward shite I've ever seen. They are kicking out young guys with families who have served 3 - 4 tours and make $50k a year but every September millions of dollars are wasted across DoD because the Pentagon punishes units that don't spend recklessly.

what the frick are you talking about?
First of all, I don't think the way in which I worded my question warranted such a reaction... Secondly, what exactly don't you understand?
I was asking if you were ok with cutting spending on welfare, SS, Medicare, etc. in addition to defense spending?
I thought the question was quite simple and not at all difficult to comprehend...

I wouldn't call going to the range and shooting a waste. That's training and it's fine by me. It's when bases build extra buildings or buy extra office furniture or bullshite like that that pisses me off.
As a matter of fact I've never heard of a unit that had ammo just to go "waste." Most are begging for more training funds but the retards at the Pentagon would rather make sure every E-3 has his own room and bath and the chow has 28 plasma TVs.

I think you misunderstood what I was saying.
He was clear that they would go and just fire off as much as they could to waste ammo so it wasn't cut in the next cycle. When the cycle would near it's end they'd go and unload what remained so they didn't get less next time around.

No, I get it. He has a fricked up command if they aren't through their allotted ammo by the 15th of the month.
But I know what you're getting at. The sp3nd it or lose it system is asinine.

Please stop with this idiocy . If this hypothetical country is powerful enough to bypass / defeat the United States Advanced Navy, Missile defense system, Air Force , Nuclear weaponry, advanced ground forces/weaponry ,etc.......some pot belly hicks with shotguns/ar-15's are going to repel them ?Stop it.
First of all stop with the paranoia as no one is invading America. Nor are any idiots with shotguns/rifles gonna defeat a tyrannical US government.
Stop with this nonsense & I pray that I could see the day when gun nuts dare point a weapon at the US military.Good laughs.

Actually yes, insurgencies are the hardest to stop. We rolled Iraq in a few days and then got bled dry over 8 years by a bunch of dudes in sandals and man dresses.

I can't believe you even responded to that drivel.

You really couldn't deduce what I was asking? I'll start over. Which guy are you?
Guy A-Wants to cut defense spending, but keep entitlement spending intact.
Guy B-Wants to cut entitlements, but keep defense spending intact.
Guy C-Wants to cut them all.
Guy D-Doesn't want to cut any of the above.
Guy E-None of the above. Explain perhaps? I don't want you to freak out on me or anything. You seem to be a little high strung today.

I don't want to "cut" any of them as much as I would like to reform all them to eliminate waste and improve adaptability to changing circumstances while at the same time putting us on a path to financial stability.

Haha yeah we maybe do 3 - 4 hours of legit work all week. The rest of your week is filled with:
Formations (sometimes formations for formations)
Mandatory training
Safety briefs
Layouts
Lunch
Mass appointments
Meetings
Waiting around for any of the above
