There's no way someone who never commanded in a Signal Battalion or wasn't in the "right crowd" was going in to 112th.
I interviewed with the 112th Signal BN Commander at CGSC for assignments and he balked at the fact that almost all my company grade time had been as an S6 with the exception being when I commanded in USAREC. I was told I was too senior to command a Signal Company when I was "KD Complete". Oh, and I wasn't airborne either. I went to jump school 1 month into my time at Corps HQ.
The thing you have to understand about the Signal Corps is that they decide their O5+ leadership when they are still O1s. If you aren't picked and "nurtured" by one of the right people you are left to fend for yourself.
