But as far as national numbers, we're talking 2% or less.
Really?
As of June 2018 the Justice Department claims
Immigrants accounted for more than 30 percent of the federal prison population and nearly all of them are confirmed or suspected illegal immigrants, the government said in a new report Tuesday.
The government said it had 57,820 immigrants in its prisons as of Dec. 31, Homeland Security and the Justice Department said in the joint report.
Nearly 20,000 other immigrants were held in pretrial detention by the U.S. Marshals Service, most of them in contracted facilities, costing the government $134 million for just three months. That works out to nearly $90 a day for each person in those contract facilities.
Most illegals commit state crimes not Federal crimes so those illegals are a social catastrophe on many grounds.

And as you can see from the chart, the federal system holds a relatively small percentage of the total 2.3M people incarcerated in the United States. So even if I concede to your numbers, that brings us from 47k in the chart to a number somewhere below 78k. So instead of 2%, we are at 3.4% as a worst case (because the article was soft on just how many of those immigrants weren’t legal).
So in the context of “how much of our rank as world leader in incarceration is due to illegal immigration?” The answer is “very, very little.”
And as to your comment concerning state crimes, while that is true, ICE holds are placed almost immediately, which is included in these numbers already.

I've read that 20-30% of California's prison population are illegals.
A year ago I read it was 30%.. Have no idea what it is now.
