Hell, if Clinton would've had to cut the minimum wage to get re-elected, he'd have done it.

Yep, It was Clinton who signed the Personal Responsibility and Work Opportunity Reconciliation Act of 1996.

Maybe so but he sure has unified the Republican party......

Really? You could just as easily say that he's fractured the republican party, emboldening the crazy-right-wing default-on-debt-and-shut-down-govt wing of the party.

And of course, "dividing the country" is precisely the strategy the republicans used against Obama and the Democrats from the stimulus and ACA on. And it's worked.

Only in an election year, and after he had vetoed it twice. His comment while signing it was (paraphrasing), "I don't like it, but I'll fix it in my second term."

From 94-97, Clinton did whatever Dick Morris told him to do. All he wanted was to get reelected.

At this point it would be rather easy to argue that's its the dems who are the more fractured of the two parties. There will always be different voices within any single party, and that's a good thing, but it appears the far left is poised to lead the democratic party if a moderate doesn't present themselves as an alternative. There could be a significant abandonment of the party if the left movement continues.

That was the point. He's the ultimate politician.

Republicans didn't have to do much. Liberals never liked it because they wanted single payer, and the PR that preceded passage of the bill by the administration was horrible.

Probably somewhat accurate but still good for conservatives. Basically, he's made left center so unpalatable that far right of center is making headway.

So, you're right. He hasn't so much as unified the Republican party as he's taken the Democratic party from being competitive even in purple states to near poison.

You're right about the ACA in particular. But the GOP used the controversy surrounding that bill as the launching pad for refusing to work with Obama at every point and doing rather silly things like shutting down the govt.

We can also add the stimulus to the equation. We were told that the stimulus would lead to hyperinflation. We were told that the ACA would lead to death panels and the collapse of the economy. We were told that the national debt was the greatest threat to job growth.

These strategies were extremely effective in getting people to think that Obama's policies are a "disaster for the country". But they have also proven to be baseless down the line.

Honestly, the POLITICAL error I think the Democrats have made is this.

Typically, any time a party wants to do something controversial, the party at least tries to claim it's "what the people want".

In the last 4 years or so, the Democrats have literally shifted to outright saying basically, "it doesn't matter what the people want, this is the right thing to do".

Now, even if that statement is true, it happens to be very fraught with problems. Namely, the subtext of that is "we don't give a frick what the majority of people think".

You can get away with that occasionally but what Democrats have basically said is "hey, we can still win nationally doing this shite so you people in those irrelevant states can suck it". Hell, look how many Dems on this board routinely remind us that they still are likely to win the Presidency in 2016. Ever since that "What's the Matter With Kansas" book, the left has literally started to say they don't give a frick about a huge chunk of states because they can still win the Oval office.

Well, that's great but those "irrelevant" states still elect Senators and House members. Not a wise strategy for getting things done.

Bill Cassidy's election says you're wrong......as usual.

Maness, from the tea party wing of the Republican party, supported Cassidy in the run off.
