Sounds like leftists complaining about gentrification except substitute white yuppies for wealthy foreign real estate investors.

Looks like it only applies to nonresident noncitizens (in other words nonimmigrants). The equivalent of green card holders (resident noncitizens) can still purchase homes.

If not mistaken there is a campaign to blacken New Zealand. Could have something to do with that.

Perhaps, but the standard of living is far lower. Met a US expat living in NZ at the airport a month ago. He said he, his wife, and three kids live in an 1100 sqft house and that's pretty much standard. Can't imagine a small residential building would cost all that much to build.

As someone who has family there, I can give you a little more insight.

The government there has always been very "progressive" overall. Even the " Conservatives" there would be a lot like the Democrats here. From what I can understand , for the past 2-3 years, a lot of wealthy foreigners from the U.S. Australia and China...big time, have been buying up a lot of property in Auckland, Wellington and Dunedin(Southern part of the South Island and because of the taxing matrix in NZ, it has really priced up the taxes on native born Kiwis who live there full time.

Kiwi's overall are a parochial people, the country has about 4.5 million people in it and they are concentrated in three main cities like Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch.

Here's the problem though, as great a place as New Zealand is, it needs the foreign investment in order to keep being the kind of country that it is. It's one of the most geographically isolated places on earth.
