Twain served for about 2 weeks. His writings reflect his distaste for slavery. His African Amercwm characters are sympathetic. Because he wrote in the vernacular of the day doesn't mean he was pro slavery. He was writing in the uneducated words of a poor white boy in Huck Fimn.
TBH I'm not a great fan of Twain.

Connecticut Yankee in King Arthurs Court
Prince and the Pauper
Pudding Head Willson

All were good
My children have read those too.
