Mind you, this can come from the Left, as well as the Right. There was nothing about the patriot act that was "common sense". Your comment, however, highlights how politically stupid our parties and voters are...everyone now likes to expand exec Powers and cram down laws via exec action without considering the fact that their team will not be in power forever.
The patriot act was a terrible law that has led to mass surveillance and like most fed legislation, it has proved impossible to repeal.
