They are a breakthrough with respect to vaccine delivery, but their use in positive-strand RNA viruses represents challenges that any vaccine delivery method would face. Thus the breakthrough would have to be on the immunologic side, in terms of how we understand viral morphology. The real breakthrough would be to get a attenuated live vaccine for pathogens with high mutation rates.
