Mental health background check for gun purchases

I get it, crazy people shouldn't have guns. I mean 33,000 people die yearly in gun related incidents. That's a friggin lot of people.
But shouldn't we also apply that to buying a car? 37,000 people die each year in car crashes.
What about for buying alcohol? 88,000 yearly deaths are alcohol related.
Tobacco=480,000 deaths annually
And let's not forget abortions. 650,000 annually.
Everyone of the above is a preventable death. I agree mental health background checks should be provided to buy guns, alcohol, tobacco, cars and they should absolutely be done to have an abortion.
IF just one life can be saved by implementing background checks shouldn't we do for everything that kills people.
Should a Dr. also do a mental health screen before prescribing addictive pain medicine to a patient?
Why are career criminals allowed back on the streets without mental health screenings?
Once again, it's an agenda with the press. It has nothing to do with the number of deaths otherwise they would be focusing on cities like Chicago, Baltimore and New Orleans.

You have to pass a drivers license test to drive a car. There is a registry of all vehicles and drivers along with their records. You must reapply after a period of time

Plus owning and driving a car isn't a right guaranteed by the Constitution.

When it comes to gun laws/regulations, I'm a strict scrutiny standard guy, the 2nd Amendment's very clear you lawyers and law students will know what that means

Some of the craziest people I have met are psychologists. Wy wife has a 64 year old aunt in Denver that is a psychologist. She is a liberal nut.
I sure wouldn't want someone like her giving mental health background checks. If you want a thorough mental health check they have to contact people that know the person to see how they feel about that person in question.
About every one of these types of shootings people come out of the woodwork that knew the shooter(s), saw their social media posts, heard them say crazy shite, etc...

This is true and I would be in favor of some sort of gun/hunters safety certificate before allowing someone to buy a gun.

Correct and this is to show ownership due to the extreme cost, just like houses, this isn’t for safety. The main reason in doing this is so that the federal government can bring. I more money to build roads.

My only point to the thread was that so many people are calling for mental health screenings to own guns, when the reality is there are many other things that cause a lot more deaths that don't require mental health screenings to buy.

I'm with you. I was trying to say that a mental health background check could involve speaking to people that know the person in question. People that are familiar with them and how they have acted or how they have changed. A psychologist is great but they are just looking at a snapshot of that person at that time. No way they can spot a big change in personality.
Basically I agree with you.

I would be for mental health checks so long as the decision didn’t fall to 1 individual. It would need to be a panel.
