That is no excuse for a shitty system.

Well who on here is calling for real, universal reforms other than a few (like me)? Who was doing this prior to J6?

quote:

No.
That is not the problem.

That's the problem with discussing it on here. People are so emotional they won't agree on undisputed facts of these cases.

quote:

The problem is there's a reason for the response.

*This time, as their in-group is facing it.

You can't read.

The problem is the system, which is what you quoted.

Where y'all have issues is only looking at the system as being corrupt when it involves your partisan in-group.

quote:

it's the emotional response to that corrupt system

Your emotionality just showed that you have problems reading simple sentences if they disagree with your NPC talking point

Let's start with the fact our society supposedly provides each citizen with the right to be vigorously defended in a court of law.

a. That's not true. Many jurisdictions are even removing the "zealous" wording in their professionalism decrees (which are mostly non-binding, unlike the ethical rules)

b. That can often hurt defendants. You over-play your hand and give that vigorous or zealous defense you shift the potential exposure and risk: reward calculation for your client. Lawyers don't have to live with the downside of this mistake, either.

Again, why the system needs reform. If bail was given more freely and punishments were decreased substantially, then this calculation changes. But this change has to be systemic and not just for the perceived in-group. THAT is the issue of emotionality in this specific instance.

quote:

Nor does your proclamation that "Nothing seems out of line there."

You left out important qualifiers, which is dishonest.

That's not out of line for our current system.

Predict what would happen on here if we were to discuss rational reforms of this system in the context of an out-group example.

You had people on here just last week arguing that we should ignore the 1A and deport Muslim citizens

Further, a number of folks arrested for J6 thought it was okay to enter the Capitol

Christopher Grider

Not so fast

quote:

According to court documents, on Jan. 6, 2021, Grider traveled to Washington, D.C., where he entered the scaffolding on the northwest terrace of the Capitol with a crowd of rioters who had pushed through a police line. He obtained a bike rack and used it to climb to the terrace stairs, and then proceeded up the terrace stairs – at one point, stopping to wave rioters toward the Capitol. Once inside the Capitol, Grider found an electric utility box and pressed buttons as he yelled “Turn the power off!” He then proceeded to the Crypt, where he was part of another group of rioters who pushed through a police line. Grider then proceeded to the hallway outside of the House Chamber, where he waved more rioters in. After this group of rioters pushed through the police line that stood between the mob and the House Main Door, Grider stood with other rioters directly outside of the House Main Door, as they attempted to get inside the House Chamber.

See this is the part about the facts not even being agreed to to which I referenced earlier.

How, specifically? You know why they were made to say this, right? Or are you opining from a place of complete ignorance? Oh….and it is “misled.”

Its the epitome of cronyism.

We would be so much better off with fewer laws and a lot fewer lawyers.

You are correct here.

Although I don't know just how drastically that would reduce the number of lawyers.

Could they ask to assigned another attorney? I would never want so,some defending me who basically thought I was guilty.

They can, but it's incredibly difficult to switch PDs in most jurisdictions because it would cause utter chaos once the floodgates were open.

PDs typically handle the vast majority of cases and constantly shuffling them would effectively seize/stall the entire system.
