I think even the mighty Ascension was having trouble feeling slots. The problem lies above the teachers heads.

It’s time to go to vouchers and let the parents decide which schools succeed.

Maybe the schools should try to micromanage their teachers less. Let them teach and have their backs.

This is written by someone who has no clue. By most contracts, teachers are observed by an administrator two times a year. One is unannounced. The other is chosen by the teacher. There may be a couple more walkthroughs.

Do the math, an administrator is observing less than 0.2% of instructional time.

Unless there is a job performance issue, teachers are left alone. Administrators don’t care.

There should be much more management of teachers to make sure they are following the approved curriculum and are teaching to their plan.

Do teachers even have lesson plans? My experience is that most do not.

Who in there right mind would teach school in Memphis Public Schools?

I have a cousin (by marriage) that is in education, all about BLM, is an “advocate”, and was soo excited the last presidential election. They also happen to live near the city limits of Memphis. But of course not “in” the city limits.

I am just floored they haven’t rushed over to Memphis city schools to help out. Just absolutely floored.

If you let charter schools try to compete for Federal money on student performance, public schools would die within a decade.

No clue? My Mom, sister, couple of aunts and several friends are teachers.

I think I have a fairly good idea of how it works.

Clearly it is not working the way it is now.

There is a lot more involved than just being observed twice a year. Your post is full of false assumptions.

Tell me more about micromanagement.
All the micromanagement should be done in adhering strictly to a set of qualifications before hiring. Once they're hired, admins/school boards need to get out of the way and let them produce the product they were hired for in the first place. Make sense?

Teachers are front-line employees. They’re not really qualified to write curriculum on an individual basis.

Former high school teacher here.

What planet are you on? School districts usually write general outlines of skills to be covered in a given grading period. The teacher figures out how to achieve that via lesson planning which is a form of curriculum development. A standardized curriculum is much more generalized than you think.

I was responsible for mapping out the grading period/semester/year. I was responsible for creating my own activities and lessons. I was responsible for writing tests and quizzes.

There is a value in “teaching to the test.” To a degree. I had to cover concepts that were on the test, but I would always go above and beyond those. I would structure my activities to look like the state test so students would be comfortable with the format.

And who do you think designs state tests and develops district curricula? Teachers do. The states will hire them on to help develop that. I spent one summer earning a stipend rewriting a district curriculum.

This. The kids would also get a better education.

With all the anecdotal evidence such as teacher shortages (all over the country….not just in Memphis), police shortages, referee shortages, nursing shortages, military recruitment way down, restaurant worker shortages, “help wanted” signs on all the retailers’ doors, etc, there seems to be little doubt that the Biden administration is doing something shady with the unemployment numbers. There’s no way our unemployment is as good as they say it is.

I don’t think you do.

I have 30 years of energy industry experience in engineering and operations, and another 15 years of teaching high school science. I know.

I stand by my prior post.

I’ll add another gem, from my lawyer:

Two job qualifications for an administrator:
1. They have to be effin stupid
2. They can’t think.

Most administrators I know wouldn’t make it out of a cubicle. Some wouldn’t make it through the front door.

Me too. Small world.

What years were you a teacher? Before or after the stint in energy? Private or public?

So she's being criticized for touting reality and truth and calling out shortcomings in the system in the best interest of the children? There's your problem right there. Amazing how many people embrace complacency.

They need to lower the standards to increase the pool of applicants. Maybe get rid of this requirement for literacy.

Standardized testing has fricked up the education system. There are still good teachers but rarely found in the core classes because they are always teaching to test well.

There are a few reasons for the shortages but I think the people at the top are doubling down on one of them.

I am a teacher in NJ (one of 4 in my district not in the union) but my school pushes equity hard. Its very frustrating. My students know that when they come to my class, everyone is treated equally and not with equity. The kids actually like that because most of them are normal.

My own kids go to a different district in the same county and it hasn't been like that at all. The very first email from their new principal yesterday talked about social emotional learning and equity and nothing about academics. Point being a lot of teachers don't want to be a part of that...so they are choosing to leave on their own and do something else.

Unfortunately the ones staying do exactly what the admin wants and push the agenda. We need more conservative teachers staying in the field and projecting strong morals and character. Uphill battle for sure.
