Meh. They did it with lend lease aid, like this US-built fighter that never really saw service with the USAAF.

There were USAAF squadrons that utilized the P-39. Primarily in the SW Pacific.
They were more effective as close air support than straight up fighters, due to altitude/oxygen system limitations. That 37mm cannon in the nose didn’t hurt in that capacity, either.
