It was bigger (The Warsaw Pact anyway). They had all of Eastern and part of Central Europe as well as the Caucasus and all of the 'Stans. They had built a geographic buffer around Russia proper that stretched from Estonia to Kazakhstan. Two thirds of the USSR's population was in those republics.
