I would like to see how most people answer this question. When it comes to considering what you might do for a living what do you consider to be the primary factor. I realize all of these can play a role but what's the primary factor

1. Finding something that serves your fellow man. I don't mean charity. I mean something that people want or need

2. Choosing something based solely on a particular skill set you have

3. Choosing something that makes you happy and you have fun doing

2 all day long.

I work for a living.

If I'm good at it I make money.

1 and 3 can be done outside of work.

Hopefully number 2 and being that it is based on a skill set that you have that number 3 would naturally be satisfied.

Unfortunately, a large portion want to do what they think will make them happy but are not naturally or even capable of success.

Fair enough.

My wording may be an issue but #2 is good.

I think #1 should be the driver. But, like I said, might be my wording. What I mean by #1 is simply this. At the end of the day, the only reason someone else is going to give you money to do a thing is because THEY need or want that thing.

Today, people seem to think the primary actor in a transaction is the seller for some odd reason. But you make the best purple people eaters the world has ever seen. If no one wants or needs them, you wont sell them.

To your point, 1 and 2 are always in balance.

You don't want to be good at something no one wants.

And you don't want to be shite at something everyone wants.

Theres a tradeoff where you want the thing you are best at that makes money.

That's why I look at them as in order.

What's the world want? Am I good at any of that shite? And then finally, does any of the shite that meets 1 & 2 make me happy?

It'll be the rare beast that gets all 3 but it does happen.

For most of us, we just hoe that after #1, the answer to #2 is, "yeah, I can do that".

For me I was good at math, science and history.

STEM pays well, so I went into Engineering since History doesn't pay well.

If I was rich I'd do history.

I like tech, but if I didn't need the money... I wouldn't do it
