This same judge has probably sentenced numerous people to far less time who have committed crimes like armed robbery, burglary, involuntary manslaughter or assault and battery where the victims suffered actual physical injury.

Nobody in this case was physically harmed and I believe his sentence to be absurdly harsh. Send them to jail yes but not for decades.

You can rape a child and get lessome years then this. This seems extreme.

If the shotgun part is true give them some gun crime. Couple hundred hours of community service and ban them from the county. Maybe 30 days in jail, i dunno.

For hate speech? We don't have hate speech crimes in the US. WTF?

This is preposterous. Not legal by any stretch.

This story smells like bullshite.

No. The man had three counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and two other counts, one related to making terroristic threats and one related to Georgia's anti-gang law.

Shitty and trashy but sentences seem extreme.

their sentence isn't the problem ... the sentence for rapists and murderers is the problem ...

Yeah...and its all for the same act.

We all know about over-charging in America. Its a bargaining chip for the State.

You push someone over in a chair and you got charged with 5 crimes.

That's America for you. Every act of every crime is in itself a crime.

I agree, but I was just pointing out that the thread made it seem like the sentence was directly related to the hate speech, when I would argue that it has more to do with brandishing the shotgun.

There were two other participants in these incidents and they received respective sentences of 2 and 4 years.

This judge is off his rocker. Citing the Dylan Roof case is further proof of it. These are people who made a very bad decision, but no one was physically harmed. Now multiple children will be spending their formative years without one or more parents. I'm sure they'll be perfectly normal.

In a situation like this, give them a little time in jail, hang a bunch of time over their heads if they can't successfully complete a stiff probation and be productive citizens. This judge has done more harm than good in trying to look tough on crime and appease the black community. I wonder if he's seeking further political office.

Okay, but I think the sentences are a little harsh. No one was physically harmed.

This is bullshite. I've never ever heard of someone being barred from a county after serving a sentence. Cannot be legal.

They don't have a hate crime statute. They were charged as a street gang, but the other people were given far lighter sentences. Apparently they were going around for a couple days too
quote:

Assistant District Attorney David Emadi detailed how the group had gone on a drunken, two-county rampage in pick-up trucks laden with Confederate battle flags through Paulding and Douglas counties on July 24 - 25, 2015.
quote:

Emadi said the group threatened African-American motorists, yelled at them and walked up to one of their cars with a gun. They also threatened African American shoppers at a Paulding County Walmart and at a convenience store.“
I mean maybe the sentence is exteme, but if BLM or some Muslim group went around targeting black people or Christians like that, would people be as outraged with the sentence?

Hmmmm... If this is true, it will be overturned. Something seems off here.

BLM? Seriously? Members that claim to be a part of their group have said much worse without even being arrested. Should these people have gotten charges of harassment? Sure.

Regardless, this will be overturned.

ETA: And yes, I would be outraged if BLM members or Muslims were arrested for speech.

So you think that "death threats" are protected speech, expecially in this case, when there is a firearm involved?

Because that's the "speech" that got them arrested.

I think their sentences seem extreme *and* rapists and murderers sentences are too light.

Why not force these people to preform community service, and pay fines rather than add them to our enormous prison pop?
