Is calling a politician "pragmatic" now an insult?

In gentler, more unified times in this country, there was no higher praise for an elected official than that he was "pragmatic". That meant that he was able to work with those he had disagreements with to reach a solution to a problem. He was not so entrenched in ideology that reasonable compromise was impossible.
Now the standard seems to be how ideologically pure and rigid you are. Graham was a pragmatist in many ways and those on the post-neocon right never trusted him. Fetterman for all his weirdness is a pragmatist Dem and the left despises him.
Is the hate deserved? Is ideological purity the way to go?

Well, we used to have 2 sides that loved America. Now we have one side whose entire platform is the dismantling of the country. To work with the dems is to work toward destroying this country.
