MidWestGuy: Heck, if you are a W2 employee, and/or collect SS, make money from stocks, divs and/or interest, the IRS already has all your information. .... many of us shouldn't even need to do our taxes, let the govt computer run them.

jclem11: Well your beef is with Intuit and the lobbyist not the IRS.
No, my beef is with Congress. They set the rules, and if they allow themselves to be influenced by lobbyists, it's on Congress.

jclem11: Hold on....you want to defund and abolish the IRS but have the "govt computer run them"? You realize that you are contradicting yourself, correct?![]()
Jokes on you. Not 'abolish', but reduce and make more efficient. The IRS already has these computer systems in place. If your 1099-Div reports you got $3,000 in divs, and you report $300, guess what? Their computer sees the mismatch, they calculate your new higher tax and send you a bill, with any accrued interest penalties. Already there.

jclem11: You are ignoring the partnerships, s corporations, C corporations, foreign filers, and expats.
Not ignoring them. I said, this could apply to many, not ALL. Why not use it and save time, effort, waste for the many that it applies to.
IRS 2019 stats
154,094,555 Individual Tax Returns
Percent that claim standard deductions (TY 2018) 87.3%
87% of 154 Million returns done automatically. That's not a small number.
And every error means more agents need to contact people and waste more time. My MIL tax guy made an entry error which caused her check to be cashed, but not associated with her account. It took me many hours to get this straightened out, got threatening letters of seizing assets, over $120 (that was paid, we had copies of the check being deposited by IRS).
You are against efficiency, and making life easier for all involved?
