I wouldn't be so sure about that. AMTRAK is operating in the red, as are local transit authorities in every single place I've ever been. MARTA, here in Atlanta is about as far from showing even the least promise of a profit that it's laughable.

There simply is no good track record of direct government involvement in mass transit. It's only used as a means to buy votes and placate the masses.
