Or you know. Just have a “qualifying life event” or wait for the exchange to open. The exchange policies cannot deny you based on a pre-existing condition.
That can be a risky game when it comes to cancer and other serious diseases. For starters they are usually diagnosed through routine preventative care and specialist visits. If cancer or heart disease gets diagnosed in an ER visit when some prolonged ailment finally gets to the point where you can't take it anymore, then you are starting in a big hole medically speaking. And second, depending on the timing of the event you might have to wait many months before you can buy a marketplace plan with your pre-existing condition and then wait for it to go into effect. That time gap can literally mean life or death. Yeah, if you get in a car wreck without insurance the ER will have to patch Humpty Dumpty back together again and eat the cost. The Surgical Oncologist can tell you "come see me next January if you're still alive".

My wife(no pics) has insurance through her work. I have a group plan for my employees. I still have a separate personal policy for myself and our kid(with another one on the way). It was cheaper to pay for the separate policy and add the kids to it.
We used a midwife for my daughter being born and will again for the next one. Wasn't covered and I paid out of pocket. It was our choice, but I was pissed neither policy would even cover a portion of the L&D cost.
I was in the hospital a couple of times at the end of last year with pneumonia. One night each. My hospital bill AFTER insurance coverage was $17k for TWO NIGHTS! It is ridiculous to pay thousands of dollars a month for health coverage and still have to pay that much out of pocket.
Its a scam for them to say "but look at how much the total bill was!" when those numbers and costs are so inflated that the amount they're asking me to pay could have paid for the entire thing by itself without all the padding the health industry puts on things.

I'm contemplating dropping it and loading up on Peter Popoff's Miracle Spring Water. Worst case, go see Cori Bush if I get really sick

Anyone done this? I mean the more I look at the cost what we spend as family what’s the point? And if we have catastrophic event taxpayers pay for it anyways and now it doesn’t effect credit So what am I missing?
Great plan as long as you dont need it…

I am surprised more folks aren't aware of this option and it's not discussed more on TD. With the staggering cost of family medical insurance premiums and increasingly high deductibles, this was a great option for us. We've been with Samaritan now for 5 years and have saved a considerable amount of money without all of the BS associated with a typical health insurance provider.

Oh I agree. Just the tests for the cancer diagnosis are high. And they normally want to start treatment ASAP. I wouldn’t ever tell people to roll the dice and hope that it works out, but there are people out that they do it all the time.

Although it sounds novel.
This is not a good move. You need health insurance. If you have a family that is your job make sure that everybody is covered and if anything happens to you it is covered. This is crazy talk. Why make the rest of society pay for you?
