This is historically the norm for midterms.

Generally, yes, and Trump's approval ratings tend to indicate that November is going to be a wipe out for Republicans, but the districts are still favorably drawn for Republicans (not saying that it's all gerrymandering, as I tend to think Dems are just inefficiently distributed more than anything else), unlike in 2010 for Dems.
Saving grace for R's is that this Senatorial cycle is incredibly favorable for them - perhaps historically so. I do think they're going to lose the House and might lose quite a few districts that they didn't think they would (PA 18th, as an example).
The party is facing incredible headwinds at the moment, and no party ever maintains the kind of advantage the R's have right now for any sustained period of time.
