first, I don't believe that 70% of Americans think abortion should be legal. I would believe closer to 50%. My guess is whoever made this poll thinks rape, or life of the mother think the same as legal in all instances.
Second, this is why our country is not a pure democracy. even if 99% of the country think it is ok to murder innocent unborn children it still shouldn't be legal.

Don't expect a lot of honesty from the social science professionals.
I think most support or at least don't want abortion to be totally illegal, but most don't want it to be birth control either.
With all the birth control available, free to poor people, abortion should be rare.

Catholicism isn’t our state religion, and no one is trying to make it. If our laws had a lot more Thomas Aquinas and a lot less Karl Marx, would that be a bad thing?
