The Israeli military said it rescued a hostage from inside a southern Gaza tunnel Tuesday morning, in its first operation to recover a live hostage underground so far in the nearly 11-month war.

Qaid Farhan Alkadi, 52, is the eighth hostage to be freed by an Israeli military operation, after he spent 326 days in captivity. Around 100 hostages remain in Gaza, after being taken by militants during the Hamas-led Oct. 7 attack that killed 1,200 people and triggered the war in the enclave.

Alkadi, a Bedouin Muslim who was a security guard for a factory in a kibbutz near Gaza, is in stable medical condition, the military said. Footage from Israel’s Channel 12 showed a helicopter bringing him to the Soroka Medical Center in southern Israel and family members lined up outside the hospital waiting to see him.

Alkadi, a father of 11, was kidnapped from his workplace in Kibbutz Magen, according to Israeli advocacy group the Hostages Families Forum. He is from the Bedouin Israeli city of Rahat, the military said. Alkadi was debriefed by security forces shortly after his rescue, the military said.
