Rather, the goal should be to diversify our energy sources, and rely as little as possible on foreign fuel inputs, for national security reasons.
You do realize almost all utility grade panels are made in china, right? With small quantities coming from Singapore, Philippines and Mexico...

I do.

You realize I said "foreign fuel inputs", right?

Solar is stupid. Naturally made fossil fuels are the most dependable, efficient energy source ever discovered.

don’t know, but Florida Power & Light is trying to find out.

What do you know about this company? Just curious because they are doing a couple of big solar projects here in North Alabama and Southern Tennessee for a new Facebook development.

Most likely was planned all along. How much money did the dims make off of these companies from gubment grants?

Think Ukraine and China, only local and "legal"?

How many acres of solar panels would be required to generate enough energy to match the US energy consumption?

I'm curious how many acres would be needed to power a true power consumer like a steel mill.

Being dependent on "foreign fuel" wouldn't be any different than being dependent on "foreign solar panels".

It is.

You're making the case against subsidies, not solar.

The science and economics of solar are improving at a nice rate. Utility-scale solar installations have grown ten-fold in Texas over the past 4 years.

Pump your brakes there killer.

This is China’s fault. And I’m being 100% serious.

Is that why companies are going bankrupt, yeildcos are gone, and everyone not pedaling cheap azz chinese panels has fled the utility scale market?

10x a minuscule number isn't significant. Except for a few weeks a year the TX grid is overpowered. No one is bringing solar on line on the TX grid because it makes economic sense.

I think what you're referring to is that we seem to mis-represent how much further along technology will be in the future. When I was a kid in the 80's, it was widely believed that we'd have flying cars, recreational spaceships, and personal robots by now.

Just because it didn't happen yet doesn't mean it's horseshiiit. It's all going to happen on a long enough timeline.

Or do you also believe electric cars will not replace most gas-powered cars? Or that they'll drive themselves?

Solar power is already reaching parity with conventional forms of power generation. It's likely going to continue to improve at a faster rate than all the rest, with fusion being a possible exception.

If the government subsidized US production of LED flatscreen panels, would you be shocked that they went bankrupt, especially after many of the subsidies tapered off? If those companies all went bankrupt, would you scream that LED panels are not viable?

No, of course not. They'd go back to being made in China and nobody would be shocked.

I think the idea was to fund R&D, but of course it turned into something else.

What exactly do you base this claim on? Some new advancement in the understanding of polysilicon physics?

It’s going to take over 2000 acres to service a Facebook development here in North Alabama. I’m guessing the Facebook project is just a building full of servers. Not sure how much power servers use but the cooling system is probably the biggest drain on power.

Literally nothing to do with it. You do realize that most utlity scale projects were built for the tax breaks, not the electricity, right?

That’s the problem is the current density of the panels don’t generate enough KW.
