I’m still very pissed at Trump for commuting the sentences of Blegoiavich and Kilpatrick. I’d love anybody to explain to me why that was a good thing for our country.

Typically when a President pardons a person it involves a prior felony conviction, and this is a custom that has been happening for quite some time now. So the things you’re attempting to compare just don’t produce the effect you’d intended. Way off course on that. Hey, no harm in trying though.

Is that the standard for pardons, “is it a good thing for our country”? That seems a bit stupiferous.

It is certainly a good and valid question that needs to be asked. Why did they deserve a pardon/commutation? Give me one good reason. Trump constantly preached about “draining the swamp.” How does forgiving a couple of crooked politicians that blatantly misused and abused their powers, and were convicted for it, get the swamp drained?

I wasn’t talking about pardons. He supported the overall sentence reduction legislation that the dems put through Congress.

What would your standards be? What message did this commutation advance? That it’s fine to sell senatorial seats? That it’s really not that bad to sell senatorial seats? That we don’t give a shite about sentences? Or most importantly, that politicians are above the law?

The point is that there is no standard, as it’s simply what amounts to a “perk” of the job enjoyed by the President. It’s openly known that reasons for pardons, if you even get a reason, range from doing an old pal a favor, to seeking to correct an injustice. And even those reasons are completely within the purview and discretion of the President. Also I’d point out that a situation that the President may consider a prior injustice might not be our view of a given situation.

But again it’s just completely at the discretion and based on opinion of POTUS. In other words, what we think about it doesn’t really matter. And less and except some seriously irresponsible pardon, say for instance, a violent crime - other than that type situation, JMO here, I just really ain’t concerned about it. Too much other more pressing stuff to be concerned with. And specifically in this instance with the ones you frowned upon, those for sure don’t get me fired up at all.
