I'm confused about the whole mask thing---reading so much on both sides. If masks are effective, why are they emptying prisons instead of just making them wear masks?
Does anyone here with actual medical knowledge of it, know if wearing a cloth mask that has the pocket where you slide in disposable carbon 5-layer filters make them more effective? It seems likely but what do I know...not much.

Then I put them out in the sun for at least 2 hours for the uv to kill anything that's in them. I'm old and don't need this crap, though. So, maybe I'm overly careful. Plus I don't get out much.

Masks help prevent the spread. N95 masks are the most effective. Social distancing helps prevent the spread. Washing hands regularly helps. These are the things that we know.
So it all comes down to people believing that they can protect against the spread by being more careful and doing what they can.
Doctors in Houston are overworked and exhausted. They are saying that the public can make a difference in the spread of the virus.
If people choose to ignore what the doctors are saying, then that is intentional. Because the public has been informed.

Cloth face coverings are recommended as a simple barrier to help prevent respiratory droplets from traveling into the air and onto other people when the person wearing the cloth face covering coughs, sneezes, talks, or raises their voice. This is called source control. This recommendation is based on what we know about the role respiratory droplets play in the spread of the virus that causes COVID-19, paired with emerging evidence from clinical and laboratory studies that shows cloth face coverings reduce the spray of droplets when worn over the nose and mouth. COVID-19 spreads mainly among people who are in close contact with one another (within about 6 feet), so the use of cloth face coverings is particularly important in settings where people are close to each other or where social distancing is difficult to maintain.
The Virons for Covid 19 are so small they go right through the facial coverings. They are actually so small N95 is also not effective.

The orders from the federal level to defer to states’ rights seems to have worked for most states. Maybe the failure of leadership falls upon those making the decisions for their state.

Because people are morons? Why is this even a question that has anything to do with whether masks work?
Um maybe because it’s a simple fricking solution and the morons you speak of are the same people that are now telling us to wear them?

Asia isn't just one place, you're talking about billions of people in dozens of countries. And since the pandemic became serious mask usage has gone way up, even in the places where it was the most common.
I’m aware of this. I’m pointing out that we didn’t seem to take their lead on this, despite it being such an easy solution.

Because due to decades of piss poor leadership the richest country on earth did not have a stockpile like the poorer ones did.
And we are still being actively discouraged from wearing actual masks, and DIY cloth ones are being suggested.
Again, it’s just strange this thing has been going on for 4 months and all the sudden surges in cases are because we are not wearing masks.
