quote:FFS, SOS, I said that in the context of a discussion to the effect that the vast majority of them were themselves the victims of abuse when they were children, yet you continue to attempt to frame it as if I asserted that they are "victims" in the context of their own offenses.
You're talking to a poster that has stated he could make an argument that child molesters are victims.
I understand that you have baggage on this point, and you have my sympathies, but you are a grown man, and you MUST ask yourself whether you are nonetheless CAPABLE of intellectual honesty in our conversations.

quote:
The Declaration of Independence AND the Constitution were drafted and adopted during a VERY irreligious period of American history, between the First Great Awakening and the Second Great Awakening.
The mid to late 1700s were certainly a unique period of American history. But is not true that it was particularly "irreligious." This is myth. Among the founders were indeed many Christians. The more secular language of the referred drafted docs raised no red flag for the "religious" of the Founders, nor did it portend any degradation of faith in America at the time. It was presumed the vast majority were indeed...Christian.
quote:
I would submit that those two VERY secular documents (especially the Constitution) may be two of the most important documents in the history of western civilization.
Technically "secular," though the documents were based on biblical principles. A compromise was struck and yes, the final draft of Jefferson's authorship featured the more "secular" language. Not seen as a problem at the time. The final draft did still require consent of the many Christian Founders; some who did push for mention of "Jesus Christ." (Mentions of "religion" or religious" was expressly understood to mean, "Christian.")
As to claims by you and others that the USCON and Declaration are "two of the most important documents in the history of western civilization," that's exactly how the docs have been framed by those who've written our "history," haven't they? (One Atheist-Socialist professor-friend felt exactly about those docs as do you; They were *his* "Bible" as well.) The truth of the matter -- the docs were the best framework for a "fair" government and a free people at the time -- though even Franklin and others knew it wouldn't last. Too many loopholes made 1863, 1871 and 2020 inevitable.
The truth about the birth and creation of "The United States of America" Or rather, "UNITED STATED OF AMERICA" is stranger than fiction. I have no time or inclination to debate the stunning truth of the matter.
quote:
Even the references to the "Creator" use Deistic language, as opposed to Abrahamic. They damn-sure do not reference either Jesus or Christianity.
True. Again, yes -- the language in the USCON was purposely written in a Deistic vein during a time when Papal-Jesuit powers were still competing against both Protestant England and anti-religious France. However some *State* Constitutions actually did include references to "Jesus Christ."
The American Founders were by and large more Christian denomination than anything else. Revisionism and wishful thinking doesn't change the reality at the time.
I've maintained the following for decades now -- as Christianity goes, so does America. You and you atheistic ilk will be as much a slave as Believers by 2030.

quote:Of course. There are highly-religious folks in even the most-secular times. But they were in the distinct minority, especially as compared to fifty years earlier and fifty years later.
Among the founders were indeed many Christians.
quote:No. They represented a "degradation" that occurred fifty years earlier. And for that reason they produced documents far superior to what would have been produced otherwise.
The more secular language of the ... docs (did not) portend any degradation of faith in America at the time
quote:And they lost, because they were in the distinct minority.
the final draft of Jefferson's authorship featured the more "secular" language. ... The final draft did still require consent of the many Christian Founders; some who did push for mention of "Jesus Christ."
quote:He anticipated that it would need continuous revision ... hence the inclusion of Article V.
The truth of the matter -- the docs were the best framework for a "fair" government and a free people at the time -- though even Franklin and others knew it wouldn't last.
quote:That is a shame. I suspect it would have been entertaining.
